Basically a fire staff's wicks are made of kevlar. Kevlar soaks up the fuel like a sponge, and does not burn, itself(Well, it does burn, but it takes a lot of repeated exposure to do so). Anything that touches the wick gets fuel on it. If the staff is lit, it gets burning fuel on it.

So you see... I'm getting burning fuel on my hand, and the trick is to, before it goes out, light up the other wick.

Human skin takes about four seconds of exposure to fire before you start to burn.

...though the hair on that arm is now a lot shorter.

I'm curious as to why you do the transfer under handed; does that keep the fuel from evaporating on the way over, or is that just an easier position for the hand to be in?
